HUGO Sukman - David Neves died in December 1994, but his assistant, also a filmmaker, Emiliano Ribeiro (A VIAGEM DE VOLTA), will carry the dream ahead.
EMILIANO RIBEIRO - David would direct the movie, and I would be his assistant. Just before he died he left a piece of paper indicating my name to be his successor in the movie project, in the way parents do with their sons.

EMILIANO RIBEIRO - "As Meninas" is a rare romance, since it brings to light the reality we lived by dictatorship time in Brazil. The movie, as the book (written by Lygia Fagundes Teles) will have a chronicle format of those days and age. However, what is more impressive to me is the human and psychological aspect of the book, which, in fact, deals with the frontier between teenage and maturity of the three girls, under the mess of military dictatorship.

Brazilian Cinema had never been noble-minded with its muses. It had abused and exhibited in close-up the parts from them. Highly beautiful women there were to feed the cultism to Brazilian woman's Beauty, and many talents had been wasted to stop the masculine thirst for voyeurism. Brazilian movie directors are central element of our masculism. But all this is changing. Two young filmmakers (Walter Salles and Emiliano Ribeiro), two movies on the screens, are, as they are known as, "actress movies", offering high level feminine characters, and not only stairs for the masculine perversion. In "Terra estrangeira, the strength of Fernandinha Torres acting, kin on break into armed barriers. In "As Meninas", three actress revenge the limits of being woman. It is a sensible movie, delicate and gentle. Three beautiful girls, three sides, the platonic ingenuity of Adriana Esteves, Cláudia Liz's emerging madness and Drica Moraes' mixture of utopy and irony. It is a movie from which you go out feeling you has fallen in love with the three characters. And with the three actresses, of course.
